ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High’s girls finished sixth while the boys were 11th on Saturday in the 22-school Albuquerque Academy Extravaganza 5K cross country meet.
The Lady Wildcats finished with 177 points, with Eldorado coming in first with 53. For the boys, Rio Rancho was first at 27 while the Wildcats were at 289, four behind District 4-5A rival Hobbs.
Hobbs was 12th with 336 points, Carlsbad placed 16th with 446 points and Roswell High was 22nd at 584 on the girls side. For the boys, Carlsbad came in 14th at 407 and Roswell High 16th at 466.
“We ran well,” CHS cross country coach Liz Ledezma said. “This is the fourth year we’ve ran this event, and every year we’ve improved. (The meet) tells us a lot about where we are state-wide.”
Sophomore Brooke Newcomer paced the Lady Cats, finishing 12th in a time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds. Freshman Roselia Morales was 17th in 19:56, senior Gabby Foggie 41st in 21:18, freshman Christina Waltrip 48th in 21:28, freshman Jelena Maldonado 64th in 21:57, junior Jarelly Navarette 73rd in 22:18, senior Kira Tree 107th in 22:24, junior Joselyn Foggie 121st in 24:00 and senior Yocelyn Romero 166th in 26:38.
Senior Sammy Fuentes finished eighth for the CHS boys, posting a time of 16:04. Freshman Adrian Surita was next at 17:41, senior Victor Sanchez came in 68th in 17:56, freshman Ryder Bonney 82nd in 18:16, freshman Marques Lippman 92nd in 18:35, senior Rudy Ledezma 108th in 19:05, senior Martin Perez 117th in 19:17, freshman Connor McQuiggan 120th in 19:20 and eighth-grader Alex Olivas-Hita 151st in 20:19.
The Cats and Lady Cats finish the regular season on Saturday in the Ron Singleton Invitational at Carlsbad. They travel to Hobbs for district competition on Nov. 1, with the Class 5A state meet slated for Nov. 9 at Albuquerque.
