On these ‘smart meters’ Xcel is installing for New Mexico and west Texas customers, I heard they give off radioactive frequency emissions that could harm human health. I’ve heard the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission has heard concerns about this.

There are no health hazards associated with being near a ‘smart meter,’ according to Xcel Energy spokesman Wes Reeves.

“Smart meters communicate using radio frequency signals that emit the same type of low-energy radiation that most of us are exposed to every day from WiFi, Bluetooth, and airport body scanners. This level of RF is approved by the Federal Communications Commission,” Reeves wrote in an email.

“According to the American Cancer Society, radio frequency radiation does not cause cancer by damaging DNA, and RF radiation does not have enough energy to remove charged particles, such as electrons, and therefore is too weak to damage DNA or cause health complications.”

According to the online publication, “Daily Energy Insider,” The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission on Oct. 17 approved smart meter use by the Texas New Mexico Power Company, operating in the state as PNM.
