Man injured in train crash

TEXICO -- A Texico man was critically injured early Sunday morning when his pickup was struck by a train at the Garwood Street crossing behind Stripes Convenience Store.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m., said Curry County Sheriff Michael Brockett. The train blocked crossings in the area for about two hours.

Andres Rodriguez, 26, was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis before being taken to an Amarillo hospital for treatment, Brockett said. He remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition, the sheriff said.

Rodriguez told rescue workers he did not know what happened.

BNSF railway conductor Floyd Willis told deputies the pickup was parked on the tracks between the crossing arms prior to the collision. The train crew was unable to stop before impact.

Deputies located Rodriguez in his pickup on the tracks about 400 feet west of the initial impact.

BNSF spokesperson Kendall Sloan said the train crew was not injured.
