Cats, Lady Cats sweep Carlsbad titles

CARLSBAD – Even without a few of their key runners due to other commitments, Clovis High’s cross country squads were able to sweep to team championships in Carlsbad’s Ron Singleton Invitational on Saturday.

No team scores were available at press time.

“I’m really proud of them,” CHS coach Liz Ledezma said of her squads. “We’ve been working on our conditioning a lot. A lot of younger kids really stepped up.”

The Lady Wildcats took the top three positions with sophomore Brooke Newcomer winning the 5K event in 20 minutes, 12 seconds and followed by Roselia Morales (20:17) and junior Jarelly Navarette (21:52). Other finishes for the Lady Cats included eighth grader Xeomara Garcia, sixth in 22:57, and senior Yocelyn Romero, 28th in 27:35.

For the boys, freshman Adrian Surita led the way with a fourth-place finish in 17:33, while senior Victor Sanchez was sixth in 17:58, senior Martin Perez eighth in 18:16, junior Santiago Verdugo 11th in 18:38, Marcello Rendon 25th in 19:48, senior Angel Diaz 43rd in 22:16 and senior Silas Atkinson-Adams 52nd in 24:19.

Clovis squads will now compete in the District 4-5A meet at Hobbs, which was originally scheduled for Friday but has been moved to Saturday. The varsity girls race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the boys following at 10:30 a.m.

Soccer – Clovis High’s bid to squeeze into the Class 5A boys state soccer tournament fell short on Sunday.

The Wildcats (14-5, 3-3 District 4-5A), whose five losses came by a goal each and included three overtime setbacks, were left out of the 12-team field. Four teams beat Clovis, including Hobbs twice and Hope Christian in Class 4A, and all made the field except Santa Fe Capital.

Centennial, La Cueva, Rio Rancho and Eldorado earned the top four seeds and first-round byes in the 12-team 5A field. The championship is set for 3 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the University of New Mexico soccer facility.
