Lady Cats sixth in Class 5A state cross country meet

ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High’s girls earned a sixth-place team finish while the boys were 10th on Saturday in Class 5A state cross country competition hosted by Albuquerque Academy.

Led by sophomore Brooke Newcomer, the CHS girls finished with 184 points. Eldorado, paced by freshman Gianna Rahmer’s meet-winning time of 17 minutes, 34.7 seconds over the five-meter course, posting a winning score of 60 to 72 for Rio Rancho.

The Lady Cats were the top team from outside the Albuquerque metro area. Newcomer had a time of 19:22.8, good for 11th place, followed by freshman Roselia Morales, 21st in 20:06.3; senior Gabby Foggie, 41st in 21:10.9; junior Jarelly Navarete, 62nd in 22:19.8; freshman Jolena Maldonado, 64th in 22:24.1; senior Kira Tree, 85th in 23:36.8, and junior Joselyn Foggie, 96th in 24:07.9.

Rio Rancho took boys’ team honors with 27 points to 67 for Organ Mountain. The Wildcats finished with 250 points, eight behind District 4-5A rival Hobbs.

Senior Sammy Fuentes paced the Cats, posting a 20th-place finish in 16:37.8. Behind him were freshman Adrian Surita, 48th in 17:21.9; junior Marques Lippman, 51st in 17:34.4; senior Victor Sanchez, 68th in 17:55.7; senior Martin Perez, 86th in 18:35.0; freshman Ryder Bonney, 89th in 18:40.8 , and senior Rudy Ledezma, 94th in 18:5.3.

Organ Mountain senior Corbin Coombs won the boys race in 14:49.0.

Portales – In Class 4A, Portales High’s squads finished last in the meet, the boys coming in 17th with 495 points and the girls placing 15th with 436. Albuquerque Academy swept both team titles, the boys finishing with 50 points to 54 for Los Alamos and the girls tallying 49 points to 62 for the Lady Hilltoppers.

The PHS boys, who just a couple of weeks ago were able to scramble a team together, were led by sophomore Leo Cordova, 91st in 19:45.2, and senior Allister McCasland, 92nd in 19:47.8. Others were senior Alan Sarinana, 125th in 22:02.6; eighth-grader Kingston Lee, 127th in 22:06.4, and senior Thomas Villalobos, 128th in 22:20.9.

Top performer for the Lady Rams was junior Miriam Caudillo, 74th in 23:47.1. Others included freshman Brianna Aguilar, 108th in 26:36.9; freshman Kloe Ruiz, 112th in 27:58.4; junior Azian Smith, 113th in 28:08.3; sophomore Samantha Trevizo, 116th in 30:04.8, and junior Emily Bustamante, 117th in 32:10.7.

Individual winners were and Taos junior Justin Daffron for the boys in 15:28.8 and Academy junior Addison Julian for the girls in 18:05.4.
