Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
If you visit James Burns in his office you'll see a print of a framed map from around 1845 of The Republic of Texas, back when it included a portion of what is now New Mexico.
The News learned more about this New Mexico businessman when we caught up with Burns after a return from a California trip this week.
Q: Where were you born? Tell us about that place.
A: I was born in Clayton, and I have to say, that part of the state holds a special place in my heart.
There's something about the rolling hills that I find especially beautiful, particularly when the area is blessed with rain. The landscape is just stunning.
Clayton also has a fascinating history that adds to its charm.
Q: How did you come to be in Clovis?
A: It all started when I fell in love with a girl from here.
I was a traveling salesman at the time, so moving wasn't a big job change for me. I just decided to make it home and marry her.
That was the beginning of a new chapter.
Q: While you recently sold your Clovis business, you still have two stores elsewhere. What do you like about your businesses?
A: I had a store in Clovis since 1991, but after selling (Burns Do It Center) to Nation's Best, they asked me to stay on as a consultant. It's been an enjoyable role, especially since I still get to stay involved in the hardware business.
I continue to own locations in Texline, Texas, and Tucumcari, and I find it really rewarding to help people solve their problems - whether it's finding the right tools or demonstrating a new product that makes life a little easier.
Q: What is James Burns' perfect day?
A: When it comes to my personal preferences, I love calm winds and mild weather.
Anything that gets me outdoors is a plus.
There's just something about being outside that refreshes the soul.
Q: Tell us about your family.
A: My wife, Katie, and I have two wonderful children.
Our daughter, Mary Cate, is an architect and lives in San Francisco, and our son, Jay, is a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
We're incredibly proud of both of them.
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: Growing up, I always admired my grandfather, who was a rancher.
I dreamed of that life myself, but it wasn't the path I ended up on. Still, I think about what it must have been like for him, and I carry that connection to the land with me.
Q: Describe yourself in one word.
A: Friendly.
Q: What is your all-time favorite song?
A: "Renegades" by X Ambassadors is a favorite.
There's something about that song that resonates with me.
Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?
A: When I think about achievements, raising two great kids is at the top of the list.
They've turned out to be amazing people, and I'm incredibly proud of them.
Q: What's the best sandwich?
A: I have to say I love a good hamburger, with green chile.
Q: What's your favorite dish?
A: I'm a fan of grilled salmon, ribs, brisket, and steak - anything cooked on the grill, really.
Q: If you could have an engaging conversation with someone from your life, from history, or from the world who would it be with? And what would you like to talk about?
A: I'm fascinated by my great-grandparents and their journey from West Virginia to New Mexico.
I often think about what motivated them to travel here by wagon and what challenges they faced along the way.
Their resilience is something I deeply admire.
Q: What's your favorite saying or quote?
A: "Wisdom is knowing what to do next, virtue is doing it."
