Hounds fall in season finale at Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville dominated early and the Javelinas cruised to a 28-13 Lone Star Conference football victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday night in the regular-season finale for both squads.

Junior quarterback Jalen Brown ran for one touchdown and threw for two for Kingsville (7-4, 6-3 LSC), completing 15-of-22 passes for 189 yards. The Javelinas took advantage of short fields to open a 21-0 lead in the third quarter.

Sophomore running back Elijah Zeh scored both touchdowns for the Greyhounds (3-8, 1-8), capping drives of 75 yards with a 2-yard run in the third quarter and a 1-yard tally midway through the fourth.

The Hounds received the opening kickoff and, after one first down, turned the ball over on downs when Zeh came up a yard short on fourth-and-2 at the ENMU 37. Junior running back Roger Hagan, who finished with 135 rushing yards on 32 attempts, carried on the first five plays to move the ball to the 6 before Brown kept over the right side to score on the next play.

A fumble by Hagan inside the ENMU 15 kept the Javelinas off the board later in the period, but senior Anthony Isom returned a punt 60 yards to set them up on the Hounds' 14. Brown finished it with a 6-yard pass to Hagan for a 14-0 lead early in the second frame.

Kingsville limited the Hounds to 61 yards in the first half, all on the ground.

Javelinas freshman Tyrell Trevino returned the second-half kickoff to the Kingsville 40, and a facemask penalty move the ball to the ENMU 45. Hagan finished off an eight-play march with a 2-yard scoring run, and junior tight end Vance Brazile caught a 17-yard TD pass from Brown early in the fourth for a 28-7 lead.

Zeh tallied 78 yards rushing for the Hounds, who had with 243 total yards to 341 for the Javelinas.

Women's basketball – ENMU's women didn't quite match what their male counterparts did earlier in the week against Navajo Tech ... but they came awfully close.

The Hounds outscored the Skyhawks 35-0 in the second quarter to open a 64-point halftime lead and cruised to a 129-39 victory on Saturday night at Steve Loy Arena.

Two days earlier, the ENMU men pounded Navajo Tech 133-33.

Saturday's lopsided outcome wasn't because the Hounds didn't substitute much. Eight players scored in double digits, led by junior guard Nataya Lockett's 22 points, and the Hounds set school records for points, field goals (54), field goal attempts (112), 3-point attempt (46, including 14 makes) and steals (32).

Ten of 11 players had at least one rebounds. and 10 had at least one assist. Defensively, the Hounds forced Navajo Tech into 44 turnovers and held an overwhelming 71-17 edge in rebounds.

Freshman forward Kaitlyn Edmondson added 18 points and 18 rebounds in 19 minutes, the first ENMU women's player with a 15-15 game since Aliva Lewis in 2020. Navajo Tech (0-1) scored 22 of its points in the third quarter.

Others in double figures were sophomore guard Daci Smith with 14 points, senior guard Jayla Smith and freshman guards Tonka Jaksic and Abbi Holder with 14 each, freshman guard Victoria Barrera with 11 and sophomore guard Tatiana Platonova with 10. Holder actually flirted with a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and six assists.

ENMU was slated to host Adams State on Tuesday night before opening Lone Star Conference play with a 1 p.m. tipoff at home on Saturday against West Texas A&M.

Volleyball – Midwestern State overcame a first-set loss to beat ENMU 19-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-18 on Saturday in the Lone Star Conference and season finale for both squads at Steve Loy Arena.

ENMU (5-22, 2-14 LSC) snapped an 18-18 tie with a 7-1 run to lock down Game 1, capped by four kills from senior outside hitter Halle Sanders. But it was all MSU after that as the Mustangs (15-14, 7-9) nailed down their first winning campaign since 2013.

Junior outside hitter Demi Stauffenberg led the Mustangs with 13 kills, while junior outside hitter Arriana Fields and sophomore middle hitter Isabella Dickens posted 10 apiece. Senior setter Brooke Parker posted a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs.

Senior outside hitter Halle Sanders collected a match-high 17 kills and added eight digs for the Hounds, while sophomore outside hitter Sophia Valdez notched 11 kills, two blocks and an ace. Senior outside hitter Randi Crandall had seven kills and paced the team with four blocks (two solos), and freshman setter Carla Reyes earned a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
