Mustangs ride big final period past Chieftains

BOVINA – Sophomore Isaac Tavera scored 15 points and junior Angel Lara added 10 on Monday night as Bovina’s boys used a big fourth quarter to turn back Friona 49-39.

Tavera (two) and Lara (one) accounted for the Mustangs’ three 3-pointers. Bovina (1-1) was tied with the Chieftains (0-3) at halftime and through three quarters, but pulled away with a 16-6 edge in the final segment.

Senior Justen Trevino tallied 16 points for Friona.

Friona 40, Bovina 34 (girls) – Outside of the second quarter, the Squaws (4-1) had no more than 10 points in a period, but a 23-point stanza gave them control of the contest.

Sophomore Aaliyah Padilla led all scorers with 21 points for Friona, including a pair of 3-point baskets. For the Fillies (1-5), freshman Sophia Olvera led the way with 11 points.

On Saturday:

Grady 44, Springer 42 (boys) – At Grady, senior Deakin Ragland led three players in double figures with 12 points on Saturday as the Bronchos opened the 2024-25 campaign with a narrow win.

Sophomore Zander Ciancio added 10 points apiece for Grady, while junior Jai Padilla added nine.

For the Red Devils (0-1), junior Jordan Chavez finished with 17 points.

Grady dominated the first half, building a 29-16 advantage at the intermission, but Springer went on an 18-3 surge in the third stanza to take a two-point lead into the final eight minutes.

Trailing by a point, Chavez had a chance to put his team in position to win with five seconds left, but missed two free throws. Ragland added the final tally on a free throw with 0.4 to play.

Springer 48, Grady 40 (girls) – The Lady Devils (1-0) fought off a late comeback bid by Grady to secure the win as junior Abigail Epler pumped in 20 points.

Juniors Olivia Burton and Araceli Cisneros added 13 and 10, respectively, for Springer. Senior Juanita Ramirez knocked in 24 points for the Lady Bronchos and sophomore Sasha Northcutt added eight.
