Elida cruises in opening tilts

ELIDA – Elida's basketball teams opened the season with resounding wins over Hondo on Tuesday night, the boys cruising 65-25 while the girls posted a 57-14 triumph.

In the boys matchup, the Tigers opened a 16-5 lead at the quarter and never looked back. Senior Hayden Fraze tossed in 16 points and sophomore Hayden Wolf added 13 as all 12 Elida players reached the scorebook.

For the Eagles, junior Ismael Ontiveros had eight points while senior Caleb Chavez and xxx Bryley Markham tallied six apiece.

Elida was just as dominant in the girls matchup, outscoring the Lady Eagles 44-10 over the middle two frames.

Sophomore Addison Yates poured in 26 points and freshman Kali Norman added 18 for the Lady Tigers. Junor Aaliyah Valenzuela finished with 10 points for Hondo.

In other girls action on Tuesday:

Happy 58, Bovina 39 – The Cowgirls improved to 12-1 for the season with a comfortable win over the Fillies at Happy.

High scorers for Bovina were freshmen Sophia Olvera with 13 points and Yareli Antillon with 11.

In the boys matchup, the unbeaten Cowboys improved to 5-0 for the season with a 68-23 triumph over the Mustangs (1-2).

In another boys tilt on Tuesday:

Clayton 58, Grady 35 – At Grady, the visiting Yellowjackets opened a 30-10 halftime lead and cruised from there.

Junior Christopher Herrera topped all scorers with 16 points for Clayton (1-0), while senior Daniel Manquero added 12.

Eleven players scored for the Bronchos (1-1), but leaders with five points each were junior Jackson Nolan and sophomore Noah Stanfield.
