Portales Student Council needs food drive help

The annual canned food drive by Portales students was a big topic of discussion at Tuesday’s regular Portales Boad of Education December meeting.

Portales High School Student Council members appeared before the board reporting Tuesday’s total -- 3,475 cans gathered, short 6,525 cans of the drive’s 10,000-can goal.

“We need people to give us a hand,” were the words passed on to the board.

Later in the session, the board voted to extend the food drive deadline to Dec. 18 from Dec. 13.

In other business, board members and meeting attendees were treated to two Christmas music selections from the high school choir.

Choir members sang “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Veni Veni Emmanuel.”

Superintendent Sharon Rowley reported some assessments were happening in some of the district’s schools.

Winter recess will begin Dec. 23 and end Jan. 5. The same dates apply for staff winter recess, according to the board agenda.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at the system’s administrative office at 501 S. Abilene in Portales.
