ENMU hoopsters sweep Cameron

Eastern New Mexico University edged Cameron, 76-74, Saturday in a Lone Star Conference men's basketball contest.

"The ball rolled our way this time," said ENMU coach Daven Võ.

Cameron led 17-9 midway through the first half, but the teams went into halftime tied at 36.

ENMU trailed 69-66 with five minutes to play, but then went on a 10-5 run to improve its season record to 6-2. The Greyhounds are 2-1 in LSC play.

"Cameron is probably the best 0-2 team in our conference," Võ said. "Cameron is really good."

The Aggies are now 3-5 for the season.

From the ENMU sports information department:

• ENMU came into the matchup ranked 12th in the nation in total rebounds per game. Both teams had 39 rebounds on Saturday. But ENMU managed 21 offensive rebounds and scored 21 points on second-chance opportunities.

• Cameron outscored the Hounds 17-4 early in the first half. The Hounds took a brief lead seven minutes before halftime. From that point, the game stayed within two possessions.

• Senior Cougar Downing led ENMU with 28 points, shooting 10 of 19 from the floor. The senior guard also picked up five rebounds.

• Junior Treyvon Byrd had 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

• The Hounds, sixth in the nation with 13.4 steals per game, had 12 swipes against Cameron. Cooper Jackson had five steals.

• Cameron had the game's last possession with 20 seconds to play. Reggie Prudhomme's three-point attempt at the buzzer fell just short.

Greyhound women cruise to win

ENMU's women used a 23-0 run to crush the Cameron women, 82-54, also Saturday at the Loy Family Foundation Arena.

The Hounds are 8-1 for the season, 3-0 in LSC play. Cameron fell to 2-4 and 0-2.

Four ENMU players scored in double figures, led by Ishuana Hunter's 16. Tatiana Platonova and Nataya Lockett each scored 15, while Abbi Holder pitched in 13.

All of Lockett's points came in the second half when Eastern outscored Cameron, 41-21.

The Greyhounds' 23-0 run came in a span of four minutes and 32 seconds over the second and third quarters.

• Eastern took advantage of 21 turnovers by the Aggies, turning them into 32 points. The Greyhounds also made the most of second opportunities, finding 21 second-chance points, with 19 offensive rebounds.

• The Greyhounds had five blocks for the second consecutive game.

• Trinity Hudson produced a season's best 11 rebounds, while playing 26 minutes. Platonova produced a season's best for points (15), assists (4), and steals (4).
