LAREDO, Texas – Isaiah Somers hit a three-point shot with 21 seconds to play in overtime and Texas A&M International’s defense made it stand up for a 79-78 win over Eastern New Mexico University on Sunday.
The Greyhounds had time for a final shot, but A&M’s Duncan Alevok blocked Mario Whitley’s field-goal try out of bounds for the difference in the game.
The Greyhounds went on an 11-0 run late in the second half to force overtime and didn’t trail in the extra period until Somers’ game-winner.
The outcome left both teams 2-2 in Lone Star Conference play. ENMU is 6-3 for the season, while the Dustdevils are 6-6.
Three-point plays were a key to TAMIU’s success: The Dustdevils hit nine treys for the game, ENMU had just two on nine tries.
Jose Murillo (28) and Mo Austin (10) had career-high point totals for the Greyhounds. Whitley scored 13 points and had nine rebounds.
Anthony Ignowski led the Dustdevils with 23 points.
The score was tied nine times.
