Cavegirls turn back Lady Rams

After opening the Portales Shootout with a couple of lopsided wins, Portales High's girls fell short of completing a weekend sweep on Saturday.

Senior guard Abbey Dugan knocked down a go-ahead 3-pointer during a game-ending 7-0 run and Carlsbad handed the Lady Rams a 37-34 setback at the Ram Athletic Center.

PHS coach Wade Fraze said his squad knew exactly what it was going to get with the Cavegirls. The loss prevented Portales (6-8) from climbing to the .500 mark.

"We knew it would be tough," he said. "Carlsbad's a good team. They do what they do, and they do it well."

Dougan finished with 18 points while senior center/forward Jasmynn Gonzales added 10 for the Cavegirls (11-2). They combined for all of Carlsbad's first-half scoring, which ended with the Cavegirls in front 18-16.

The teams were virtually even throughout the second half.

Senior Tya Rippee scored a personal-best 14 points for the Lady Rams. Senior guard Angel Ornelas finished with seven points, four rebounds and two steals.

Despite their somewhat slow start, Fraze thinks his squad will be fine in the long run.

"I still think we're on the right track," he said. "Tonight, we had our opportunities, but we just didn't take advantage of them."

In Saturday's early girls game, Silver posted a 48-21 victory over Miyamura.

Portales 50, Silver 27 (Friday) – The Lady Colts were no match for PHS in this one as the Lady Rams stormed out to a 21-2 lead after the first quarter.

Banda scored 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and added five rebounds and three steals for the Lady Rams. Fulfer added 12 points on four first-half 3s, including three in the opening stanza, and added six rebounds while Ornelas posted eight points, five rebounds and three steals.

Massey chipped in team highs of seven rebounds and three assists to go with three steals.

Junior guard Nyssa Torres had a pair of 3s and 12 points for the Lady Colts (4-4), while junior guard Taylianna Castillo chipped in nine.

In Friday's early girls contest, Carlsbad rolled over Miyamura 64-25.
