OLTON – Bovina led much of the way, but a 3-point shot by Olton in the closing seconds on Friday night gave the Lady Mustangs a 46-43 win over the Fillies in the Class 2A District 3 opener for both sides.
Bovina (5-12) led by as much as 10 points in the second half before Olton (17-6) rallied back.
Freshman Sophia Olvera scored 19 points for the Fillies, while senior Cassie Marquez had nine.
In other Friday girls action:
Farwell 73, Hale Center 29 – At Hale Center, the Lady Blue ran away with their District 3 opener against the Lady Owls (12-7) behind 24 points from senior Makylee Baldwin.
Senior Bella James went 7-for-9 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range for Farwell (21-3), and added 19 points while sophomore Alexa Wade netted 11 points and senior Landri Richie 9.
Texico 63, Capitan 9 – At Texico, the Lady Wolverines blanked Capitan over the middle two quarters in posting an easy win.
All 10 players scored for Texico (6-3), led by junior Macy Cline with 18 points and senior Desiree Holman with 12. Top scorer for the Lady Tigers (3-7) was senior Reyanne Harris with eight.
Roy/Mosquero 60, Grady 9 – At Roy, the Lady Blue rolled to a 24-0 lead at the quarter and cruised from there.
High scorer for Roy/Mosquero (11-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 1A by MaxPreps, were sophomore Taylor Proffitt with 16 points and seniors Nora Crisp and Natalie Smith with 15 and 14, respectively. For the Lady Bronchos, senior Juanita Ramirez scored six points.
In a Saturday matchup:
Grady 57, San Jon 44 – Senior Juanita Ramirez poured in a personal-best 37 points, including 14 in the third quarter at Grady (3-8) outscored the Lady Coyotes 22-10 to open a 17-point cushion.
Four players tallied at least eight points for the Lady Coyotes (4-5), led by juniors Alexa Becerra with 12 points and Summer Jennings with 10.
On Monday night:
Eunice 48, Dora 34 – At Dora, the Lady Cardinals outscored Dora 18-8 in the final stanza after the Lady Coyotes used a strong third quarter to get close.
Seniors Aleena Rodriguez (19) and Makenna McBee (14) led the way for Eunice (7-3). Junior Dakota Jones tallies 14 points for Dora (5-4), while senior Justice Dawson added eight and sophomore Karen Inge had seven.
