A Texas man last week was sentenced to 10 years in New Mexico’s Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to DWI – eighth or subsequent offense.
Jimmy Norwood, 61, was arrested by Curry County deputies last Aug. 25 when they responded to a one-vehicle accident at State Road 108 and Curry Road 13.
According to a news release from District Attorney Quentin Ray:
• Norwood, was identified as the driver of the vehicle. Deputies saw an open beer can and signs of impairment displayed by Norwood.
• Following Norwood’s performance during a field sobriety test, deputies placed him into custody and transported him to give him an alcohol breath test. Norwood’s breath test registered above the legal limit.
Judge Benjamin S. Cross on Jan. 2 sentenced Norwood. Once he has completed his sentence, he will be released on two years of parole.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Anthony Jaimes.
Norwood was represented by Criminal Defense Attorney Angelina Baca of Clovis. Baca said that while prosecutors described Norwood as a “Texas man” she said he has a Clovis home address.
Baca works for the area public defender’s office.
