Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
I saw on an Amarillo TV station they have “warming shelters” there for homeless people on bitter cold nights. Do we have those in Clovis and Portales?
A “warming center” is offered at the Nurstead Drop-in Center, 300 Commerce Way, in Clovis according to a Nurstead Facebook posting.
The center is open 24 hours a day with the sleeping area open from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Nurstead founder Justin Nutt on Tuesday confirmed the information on the post and went on to say Nurstead is looking into also establishing a warming center in Portales.
Legacy Church at 820 W. 18th St. in Portales offers a warming center when the temperature drops below 32 degrees or other circumstances such as high wind or precipitation, according to Pastor’s Assistant Tate Smith.
When the center is open it is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
“If someone has any questions, call me, I’m the point of contact for the warming center, (575) 562-7761,” Smith said.
