Portales students surpass school canned-food goal

Portales High School students had a goal of collecting 11,000 cans of food for the community at the end of 2024.

Mission accomplished.

The students and contributors came up with 12,462 cans, according to Superintendent Sharon Rowley.

The announcement of the food collection was part of the business at Monday’s regular Portales School Board meeting.

School Board President Inez Rodriguez was honored for her award from the New Mexico School Board Association. Rodriguez was honored as “Board Member of the Year” by the statewide organization.

The board approved trips for various school personnel and student groups in the upcoming months: A football and strength coordinating clinic in Dallas Feb. 6-9, A theater class to Lubbock to see a production of “Les Miserables” Feb.13, a tour of West Texas A&M University’s College of Communication in Canyon, Texas, April 9, a softball coaches clinic in Oklahoma City Jan. 24-25, and a seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball trip to Muleshoe Jan. 23-25.

Rowley expressed her gratitude for everyone’s patience in dealing with last week’s snowstorm.

The next regular meeting of the Portales School Board will be 6 p.m., Feb. 10 at the school system’s administration building at 501 S. Abilene in Portales.
