ELIDA – Elida's boys scored the game's first 12 points and fought off a late run by rival Floyd for a 54-45 victory in the District 4-1A opener for both squads on Thursday night.
Elida also took the girls contest 47-7.
The Tigers (6-5) led by 17 points early in the fourth quarter of the boys' tilt before the Broncos (4-7) mounted their comeback. Three-pointers by senior Jimmy Lovato and freshmen Archer Knox and Brayden Parks pulled Floyd to 48-45 in the closing moments, but Elida scored the final six points.
Junior Radlee Ferguson scored 15 points to lead Elida, followed by sophomore Hayden Wolf with 12 and senior Dylan Dobbins with nine. For the Broncos, junior Edwin Gallegos had three 3-pointers and 11 points while Parks followed with a pair of treys and eight tallies.
Meantime, Elida's girls (6-6) outscored Floyd 13-0 in the second quarter to open a 21-point halftime cushion. Eighth-grader Kaylee Nixon posted eight points for the Lady Tigers and senior Nevaeha Brown collected four points for the Lady Broncos (4-7).
In Tuesday girls contests:
Floyd 40, San Jon 29 – The visiting Lady Broncos led virtually wire-to-wire, outscoring San Jon 10-1 down the stretch to break the game open.
Senior Nevaeha Brown scored 20 points for Floyd, including 10 in the fourth quarter and for free throws for the final points. Senior Dakota Fisher led the Lady Coyotes (5-6) with 14 points, all in the first three stanzas.
Melrose 61, New Mexico Military 10 – The Lady Buffs ran away from NMMI in this one to improve to 8-2 for the season.
Plenty of reserves saw floor time for Melrose, with nine players contributing to the scoring column. Freshman Neia Lucero posted a personal-best 16 points to pace the Lady Buffs, while junior Bree Maldonado added 10.
Farwell 61, Bovina 6 – At Bovina, the Lady Blue rolled to a District 3-2A victory over the Fillies (5-16, 0-4 district).
Eight players scored for Farwell (24-3, 4-0). Senior Makylee Baldwin scored eight of her 16 points in the opening stanza to get the Lady Blue off to a quick start, while senior Landri Richey knocked in six of her 10 points in the third stanza.
Corona/Vaughn 44, Grady 21 – Sophomore Harper Dunn poured in 26 points and the Lady Cardinals (6-2) cruised to a victory at Grady.
High scorers for the Lady Bronchos (3-9) were senior Juanita Ramirez with eight points and junior Jaebri Scott with five.
Clovis High JV 52, Clovis Christian 19 – At CCS, sophomore Sara Chavez had three six 3-point baskets and 22 points as the JV Lady Wildcats were dominant, especially in the opening half.
Sophomore Alexis Campos added 13 points and freshman Kanaeh Caswell 12 for Clovis. Top scorer for the Lady Eagles (4-7) was junior Lauren Weaver with six points.
In boys action on Tuesday:
Grady 62, Corona/Vaughn 23 – The homestanding Bronchos (7-5) erupted for 30 first-quarter points, getting scoring in the stanza from eight players led by seven points from sophomore Gavin West.
Sophomore Zander Ciancio led Grady with 16 points, including six in each of the first two cantos, while fellow sophomore Caden Croy added 13.
For the Cardinals (1-10), senior Aiden Zook finished with 14 points.
Farwell 92, Bovina 34 – In District 3-2A at Bovina, the Steers erupted for a 57-15 halftime lead en route to victory over the Mustangs.
Junior Braddock Foster led all scorers with 28 points for Farwell (19-4, 2-0), while senior Ryder McElroy and junior Hudson Agee collected 17 apiece. Junior Chris Reyes finished with 12 tallies, and sophomore Ruben Molina netted nine.
Farwell notched nine 3-point baskets, including three apiece from Foster and Molina. Top scorer for Bovina (3-10, 0-2) was junior Angel Lara with 10 points.
In an area non-district matchup, host Melrose (8-2) posted a 50-30 victory over New Mexico Military (6-6).
