Having someone in every weight class paid off on Tuesday for the Clovis High girls wrestling squad.
A forfeit by Hobbs at the opening weight class (100) cost the Lady Eagles dearly in the end and the Lady Wildcats were awarded a District 4-5A victory after the teams ended in a 36-36 standoff at Rock Staubus Gymnasium.
Meantime, Hobbs cruised to a 46-18 victory over the Cats in the boys dual. The matches were makeups from a snowout the previous week.
CHS squads are now 1-1 in district duals, with the boys having beaten Roswell High and the girls losing to the Lady Coyotes.
Eighth-grader Xeomara Garcia collected the forfeit win and the remainder of the match consisted of 11 pins – five by Clovis, six by Hobbs.
Early on, it didn’t look like it would be a factor. The Lady Cats led 24-0 after pins by junior Jarelly Navarrette at 107 and Zulehiny Mendoza at 114 and senior Alexa Delgado. When eighth-grader Natalie Mejia scored a second-period fall over Janessa Perez at 132, the score mounted to 30-6.
Hobbs then rallied with five consecutive falls to surge in front before sophomore Guadalupe Guzman pinned Hobbs’ Kassandra Reynoso in the first minute of the second stanza at heavyweight to retie the team score.
The Wildcats produced three wins by fall in the contest – senior Kaell Berry over Miguel Gonzalez late in the second frame at 139, junior John Royal over Izaiah Sosa in the opening stanza at 189 and junior Kaleb King over Jon Jaramillo in the first frame at 215.
Of the Eagles’ nine wins, three were by regular decision (seven points or less) – 13-10 by Joshua Regalado over freshman Antonio Pena at 121, 9-6 by Alijah Rodriguez over eighth-grader Ryan Alegria at 133 and 12-7 by Aidan Gluhm over senior Angel Diaz at 172. Hobbs posted four wins by fall and one each by major decision (8-11 points) and technical fall (16 points).
Clovis wrestlers were to return to action this weekend in Volcano Vista’s Joe Vivian tournament at Albuquerque. Next up for the Cats and Lady Cats are district duals against Carlsbad beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday at The Rock.
