Lady Buffs nip Logan in final minute

MELROSE – Junior Skyla Wicker scored the go-ahead basket with 25 seconds left and Melrose survived a 3-point attempt by Logan at the buzzer to notch a 43-41 win on Monday night.

In the boys matchup, the Class 1A top-ranked Longhorns (12-0) handed Melrose (9-4) an 85-61 setback. The longtime district rivals are now in opposite districts, and the games were added to help replace games lost when the EPAC tournament was canceled due to weather earlier this month.

The girls’ contest seesawed back and forth. Melrose led by two points at the quarter, and the teams were tied at halftime and after the third stanza.

Senior Chantzee Elliott posted 15 points and eighth-grader Braylan Morgan added 12 for the Lady Buffs (11-2), who extended their winning streak to nine games. Senior Marilyn Moreno netted 12 points and junior Desta Rose tossed in 10 for the Lady Longhorns (8-7).

Texico cruises past Loving – In District 4-2A openers at Loving, Texico’s girls rolled to a 68-21 win over the Lady Falcons while the Wolverines ran away to a 77-33 triumph in the boys clash.

Junior Macy Cline scored 15 points and the Lady Wolverines (8-4 overall) built an overwhelming 52-9 halftime lead.

Junior Brylee Burgin and Kailie Wieland each added 11 points for Texico. For Loving (2-8), junior Lyse Gonzales tallied eight points.

Texico (11-1), ranked second in Class 2A by MaxPreps, ran away to a 23-7 lead at the quarter in the boys tilt. Junior Bennett Wahlen notched 17 points for the Wolverines, while sophomores Jett Curtis and Jaheim Moses had 16 and 11, respectively.

For the Falcons (4-10), junior Tristen Onsurez finished with a game-high 25 points.

A Monday night non-district doubleheader sending Floyd to Grady was postponed. The games are not likely to be made up at this point.
